Have you ever wanted to try everything? I don’t mean ‘everything’, for example, I could pass on extreme sports. I mean creatively. I want to dabble and experiment in all things creative. I used to draw a lot as a kid and had a natural flare for it, much like my sister Yvonne (I don’t mind bigging up her artistic talents here). It was encouraged but I never pushed myself further with it. Why? Because I was Second Best in the Class!
During primary school, there was another pupil that was better at drawing than me. I was envious of him. His abilities were amazing. He’s on my Facebook friend list so I must ask him if he’s still drawing. I’ve just realised the harsh feelings I harbouredfor him during that time. But it’s as I say, his work was excellent. Imagine after I contact him, I find out his mother did all the drawings for him. That would be nice to hear. Am I still holding on to some jealousy? I’m just kidding.
I’m afraid to admit it but I think in retrospect that my feelings of Second Best have stunted my commitment to my own artistic streak. There has been a very long period whereby I’d only revisit drawing or painting for a few days each year. I kinda wish I had of stuck at it and maybe have gone to college for Art or Design, rather than boring IT. My advice for me nieces and nephews, making college decisions, will be to follow what you are good at and what you love to do.
So getting back to what I want to do. I look at other artists and think ‘I could do that’. I feel I have the confidence. Maybe I should just start doing. I’ve already dipped into Poetry, Painting/Drawing, Writing, Sewing, and DIY (that can be creative too, you know). Now I want to progress and develop these and try my hand at everything else, or to start with: Sculpture (all mediums), Photography, Music, Film, Singing, Acting, Furniture, Upholstery, Fashion, Welding. Lets see how far I get huh? Time is precious and that’s a big list. If any of you reading this are experts and want to give me some advice. Feel free to do so.
If only I could do something like this for Woodhaven:
